Kids Summer Workshops

RAL can help in providing your loved one with meaningful experiences this summer! Local artists and teachers volunteer to plan and support these engaging learning opportunities. Art Camps will meet in the Studio in the RAL Gallery at 19 North Main Street in Kilmarnock. Pack a lunch and enjoy lunch with the instructor between 12:00-12:30. Please dress in appropriate wear for an art studio and possible permanent materials. Participants will also have opportunities to explore and discuss the art with artists and volunteers in the gallery throughout the week! Camps are for ages 7 and up unless otherwise noted.
Each session is $85, includes most materials. Sign up for both, pack a lunch and stay all day. Send a white T-shirt for altering with design in art camp.

June 26 - 30

10am - 12pm:  Awesome Mosaics!
Two amazing creations! Create a magic mosaic reflecting ball for an outside space. Embellish a wild creature to hang on your bedroom wall!
12:30 - 2:30pm:  Five Fabulous Days of Art!

July 10 - 14

Instructor, Sandy Manning, Art Educator Lancaster County Schools
10am - 12pm: Printing and Paper-making, Age: 9 -13*
12:30 - 2:30pm: Printing and Paper-making, Age:14 -17*
Students will create prints in as many formats as we can possibly cram into our sessions!! Fingerprints, Monoprints, Linoprints** older group only, Etchings, and Silkscreen/stencil prints.
Each Art Camp will feature an artist, color scheme/ subject area, and process for printing. Parents are invited to attend on the 14th (our last day) for the last 30 minutes to provide positive feedback for the display of finished prints. Each participant is asked to bring a cotton T-shirt on the first day of the camp.

July 17 - 21

10am - 12pm: Clay Ways
Play with clay! Air dry and more, if available. Make something you use, something you imagine, and much more! Glaze and paint your creations!
12:30 - 2:30pm: Art of Science
Hands on art and science all week. Make your own crystals, kaleidoscope, op art, slime, marble maze, and a catapult!

July 24 - 28

Instructor, Sonja Smith, Art Educator Chesapeake Academy
10am - 12pm: Crazy Cuckoo Clocks
Create your very own cooky cuckoo clock. These clocks will be built using a variety of mediums- from paper cutouts, to paper mache. We will embellish them to your heart's delight, and at the end of the week, you will have a lovely clock to take home and keep track of the time. (They will include a working clock).
12:30 - 2:30pm: Sweet Treats
Explore the varieties of art that can be made using sweet treats as inspiration. We will build ice cream truck sculptures, paint and draw Wayne Thiebaud inspired works, and even make jewelry that looks like candy!

July 31 - August 4

Instructor, Marilyn Sprouse, Art Educator Lancaster County Schools
10am - 12pm: Beach Week!
All the art we want to make while thinking about the shore! Something crabby, sand casting, turtle weaving, jellyfish mobile, sand painting, and more!
12:30 - 2:30pm: Canvas Painting.
Wildly popular at RAL are Paint Nights, guided canvas experiences that focus on one or two concepts. This is modified for the young, who will paint up to three canvas paintings : palette knife painting, in the style of a famous artist, and free style/form. Each participant is asked to bring a cotton T-shirt on the first day of the camp.

Teen Paint Night

The First Saturday of every month will now be Teen Paint Nights at the Studio Gallery. This fun workshop for artists and non-artists alike will be led by a certified art teacher or an RAL artist. Spend an enjoyable evening with friends and new friends. 
The workshops are $30 for all materials and snacks will be provided. For mature teens 12 or older.

Saturday smARTS

RAL's popular Saturday smARTS workshops are offered from October to March. They are held on the 3rd Saturday of the Month from 10:30am – 12:30pm unless otherwise stated. The cost of all workshops is $25 plus a materials fee. Artists from the gallery will teach the workshops. Class size limited to 12. Walk-Ins are welcome if space is available.   (7 years & older)
